Cocking Your Wrist In Your Back Swing
| PeakPerformanceGolfSwing.com |
In this lesson I want talk about cocking your wrists in the backswing.
If you believe cocking the wrists in the backswing is absolutely necessary for power generation you’re not alone. Many amateur golfers have been fed this faulty bit of advice. In fact, it’s common enough -– and harmful enough -– to get a spot in my Top 10 Amateur Swing Mistakes.
And we’re going to dispel this dangerous myth right now.
Listen, not only are amateurs told to cock their wrists… but you have 3 choices for where you cock, break or set them. You can be a:
1.) Takeaway-cocker — setting the angle immediately at the start of the backswing.
2.) Mid-cocker — where you set the angle when the club is around parallel to the ground.
3.) Top-cocker — where you cock your wrists to set the club parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing.
The point I want make here is this:
If you cock, break or set your wrists at any point during your back-swing, you are changing what I call “The #1 Domino.” Do you know what happens when the first domino falls?
They all fall!
When you cock or set your wrists, you change the angle of your left forearm to the shaft… as well as change all the muscle lengths and tone of your arms and hands.
So I believe, and teach, “Good wrist action is no wrist action.”
In the backswing, you want to do everything mentally and physically possible to ensure you never let your left wrist angle change in the backswing. Lifting the club properly, from the takeaway to the top of the backswing, gets the club above the hands at the top without any change in muscle length or tone, and is the key ingredient to having a 3/4 length and vertical backswing.
There you go.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this short lesson today.
Happy Golfing.
