Today we’re going to take apart the take-away.

This is something a lot of amateur golfers don’t even think about. They were told early on to push the club away low to the ground and adopted that technique without question. Now, it’s just part of the way they do things.

That’s a big mistake!

And in today’s lesson, I’ll explain why and what you can do to correct it.

So pushing the club away low to the ground on take-away is just another one of those bogus tips that get tossed around. Truth is, taking the club away low causes the left shoulder to be pulled down, yielding a reverse tilt. Your club needs to be lifted up to keep the shoulders and hips level, and to get it above your hands at the top of the backswing.

I teach that we lift the club from the shoulder sockets up in a rounded arc.

I use the image of a catcher squatting right behind your aiming line — with his glove out, around knee high. Now what you do is lift your club up with both arms right from your shoulder sockets into the mitt toe up. The proper rotation of the arms and clubface is achieved by making sure the club goes into the mitt… toe up.

Pretty easy, isn’t it?
